UN rights chief calls on Iran to stop executions

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein

 UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein issued a statement describing increasing executions in Iran as “shocking” and called on Tehran to stop all capital punishment in this country.

The UN High Commissioner in this statement expressed his concerns over a death sentence issued for political prisoner Mohammad Ali Taheri and said this ruling highlights the escalating use of death sentences by Iran.

Al-Hussein called on Iranian officials to immediately drop all charges against Taheri and guarantee his unconditional release.

The use of capital punishment by Iran is a long-lasting problem, the High Commissioner explained, adding this includes executing individuals below the age of 18 at the time of their alleged crime and other cases where very vague-worded accusations are raised.

In the meantime, a rally was held outside the UN Human Rights Office in Tehran protesting the death sentence issued against Mohammad Ali Taheri.

One of the regime’s interrogators and torturers, by the name of Mohammad Reza Rahimi, was seen directing and issuing orders from inside a vehicle near the rally site. He was guiding security forces to repress and arrest the protesters.

The inhumane mullahs’ regime, terrified of such protests inflaming across cities, took drastic measures to station a large number of security forces in various areas.

Another rally was also held in Isfahan where people demanded Taheri’s release from prison.
